The new 32-team knockout bracket — explained
World Cup 2026 introduces a brand-new format for the knockout stage. With 12 groups instead of 8, FIFA needed a way to balance the bracket — and the solution is a 32-team Round of 32. All 12 group winners and 12 runners-up automatically advance. They are joined by the 8 best third-placed teams, ranked across all 12 groups by points → goal difference → goals scored → fair play → FIFA ranking. The result is one extra knockout round and an additional rest day for top seeds, plus genuine value for sharp bettors backing strong third-placed sides at long prices.

Dark Horses to Watch
Teams priced well outside the favourites that carry genuine upside — backed by recent form, tactical depth, or favourable draw.
Semi-finalists in 2022 with the spine of that squad still intact. Strongest African defense on record at major tournaments; Group C draw vs Brazil is tough but second-spot path is realistic.
First World Cup since 1998 — and they arrive with the world's most prolific striker. Haaland-Ødegaard axis is a tournament outlier. Tough Group I with France, but third-place qualification path opens at long prices.
Copa América runners-up in 2024. Attacking depth with Luis Díaz, Jhon Durán, James Rodríguez. Group K offers a genuine race vs Portugal with realistic top-spot upside.
Three of the last four tournaments — final (2018), 3rd (2022), strong Euro 2024 group exit. Modrić's last dance. Group L draw vs England is brutal, but their tournament tactical IQ remains unmatched.
Best African squad on paper: Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly, Édouard Mendy. AFCON 2021 winners. Tough Group I draw with France, but a second-place path through softer R32 opposition.
Marcelo Bielsa's high-press transformation. 3rd-place Copa América 2024. Federico Valverde anchoring midfield, Darwin Núñez leading the line. Group H second-spot path through Spain is realistic.
